Time tracking: timer and logging time

Updated:

In Taska, the timer in the task chat counts how long you've worked. The time is added to the task together with a chat message. Time tracking works in team spaces on the Business plan.

How to start the timer

  1. Open the task. The timer is in the chat above the message field, in the “Timer” row.
  2. Click the button with a triangle to the right of the digits.

The timer starts counting, and the start button turns into a pause button. The timer keeps counting even if you close the task window or the browser tab. While it runs, the task card shows a stopwatch, and “Timers” appears in the sidebar.

You can also start the timer from the board. Right-click the card and choose “Start timer”. The timer also starts by itself if the column has the “Start the timer” automation and you move the task into that column. See “Status automations” for details.

How to enter time manually

If you forgot to start the timer, you can enter the time yourself.

  1. Click the timer digits. The timer stops counting.
  2. Enter hours, minutes and seconds. After two digits, the cursor moves to the next part by itself.
  3. Press Enter. Esc cancels the entry.

The timer stays paused with the time you entered. You can enter up to 99 hours manually.

How to log the time to the task

  1. Check that the timer shows the time you need.
  2. Write in the chat what you did.
  3. Press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac) or click the send button to the right of the field.

The time is added to the task with the message, and the timer goes back to zero. If it was running, it starts counting again right away. You can't log time without a message, because an empty message with no text or files isn't sent.

Where you can see logged time

  • In the chat. A message shows a clock icon with the time logged with it.
  • On the card. A stopwatch with the total time of the task is shown while your timer runs. To always show the time on the card, open “Task card settings” and choose “On the card” for “Time spent”. See “Card view, focus and quick look” for details.
  • In the task's quick look panel, in the “Time spent” row.
  • In the time report. The “Time report” clock button in the board header opens it. The report adds up time by person and by task.

The Timers panel

The panel lists all your timers from all tasks. “Timers” appears in the sidebar when you have at least one timer, and it blinks while a timer runs.

The Timers panel on the right: Timers in the sidebar is numbered 1, Start 2, the square button 3, the trash icon 4 and Delete all timers 5
  1. “Timers” in the sidebar opens the panel.
  2. “Start” or “Pause” controls the task timer.
  3. The square button resets the timer to zero, and the timer stays in the list.
  4. The trash icon deletes the timer.
  5. “Delete all timers” deletes all your timers at once.

Clicking a task title in the panel opens the task window, and the “Board” line takes you to the board. Resetting and deleting happen immediately, without asking, and the unsent time is lost.

If you're editing your message

While you're editing a message, the timer is locked. Time already logged with a message doesn't change when you edit the text.

If you delete a message with time

The time leaves the task and the reports together with the message. It can't be restored.

If the timer was reset or the time didn't get into the task
