Task chat: replies, mentions and reactions

Updated:

In a task chat in Taska, you write messages, reply to specific messages, mention teammates with “@” and add reactions. All of this is saved right away.

How to write a message

  1. On the right side of the task window, type in the “Type a message...” field. Enter starts a new line.
  2. Press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac) or click the send button to the right of the field.

To attach a file, click the paper clip to the left of the field or drag the file into the chat. File uploads work on paid plans. Attached files also appear in the “Files” block. The smiley in the field opens the emoji picker.

If you close the window before you finish a message, the text stays in the field until you reload the page.

How to reply to a message

  1. Hover over the message and click the “⋮” icon next to it. Or right-click the message.
  2. Choose “Reply”. A bar with a quote from that message appears above the message field.
  3. Type your reply and send it.

The reply shows a quote, and clicking it scrolls the chat to the original message. The author of the original message gets a notification. To reply to part of a message, select that text and click “Quote”. Esc cancels the reply.

How to mention a teammate

  1. In the message field, type “@”.
  2. Start typing a name and choose the person from the list.
  3. Send the message.

The list only includes people who have access to the task. The person you mention gets a notification. In a personal space there's nobody to mention, so the field shows no hint about “@”.

How to add a reaction

  1. Hover over a message. A circle with the reaction you use most often appears at its bottom corner.
  2. Click the circle to add that reaction. To pick another one, keep the pointer on the circle, and the full set opens.

Reactions appear under the message with the number of people, and the message author gets a notification about them. Clicking your own reaction removes it. Clicking someone else's adds the same reaction from you. On a phone, reactions are at the top of the menu that opens when you tap a message.

How many reactions of your own you can add to one message depends on the plan of the space the task belongs to. For personal tasks, that's your personal plan. On a free plan it's one, and a new one replaces the previous one. On a paid plan, such as Business or Pro, it's up to three.

What else is in the message menu

  • “To the checklist” adds the message text to the “Checklist” as an item.
  • “Create a task” opens a new task window on the same board with the message text already in the description. Tasks in “Inbox” don't have this item.
  • “Pin” moves the message to the bar above the chat. If several messages are pinned, the bar shows them one by one.
  • “Copy link” copies a link that opens the task and scrolls the chat to this message.
  • Your own messages also have a view count with a “Seen by” list, plus “Edit” and “Delete”.
How to edit or delete your message

Choose “Edit” in the message menu. Or press the Up arrow in an empty field to edit your last message. Save the edit with Ctrl+Enter or the check mark button. The message then shows “edited” next to its time. Taska asks you to confirm a deletion, and you can't undo it. If time was logged with the message, that time is removed from the task too.

What the check marks and the line in the chat mean

One check mark on your message means “Delivered”: nobody has seen it yet. Two check marks mean “Read”: at least one person has seen it. The “Unread messages” line marks where your unread messages start.

Why you can't write in the chat

Guests in the project, and everyone viewing a task in an archived project, see the chat as read-only. If the connection drops, “Connection lost. Reconnecting...” appears above the field. You can send messages again once the connection is back.
