Card view, focus and quick look
In Taska, a card can be shown in one of five views, from “Minimal” to “Detailed”. Focus highlights what matters on every card, and quick look opens a task on the side without leaving the page.
How to change the card view
- In the header, click the card view button. On a board, it shows the name of the current view, for example “Standard”. In “Today”, “Upcoming”, “Inbox” and “My tasks”, it's an icon with the tooltip “Card view: Standard”.
- Choose a view in the menu.
| View | What the card shows |
|---|---|
| “Minimal” | The title and two key details under it |
| “Icons” | Properties as icons with numbers |
| “Standard” | A quiet line of properties and a signal line, for example about a blocker. This is the default view |
| “Text” | Properties in one sentence, such as who the assignee is, the deadline and how many checklist items are checked off |
| “Detailed” | All task properties. Only what the place already tells you is left out, for example the status on a board, which the column shows |
The view is personal, and only you change it. A choice made on a board applies only to that board. “Today”, “Upcoming”, “Inbox” and “My tasks” share one view, and the phone has a view of its own. Taska saves your choice in your account, so cards look the same on another computer. What a card shows in the “Standard” view is described in “Task card: what it shows”.
How to turn on focus
Focus highlights what matters on every card and dims the rest. Cards aren't hidden or rearranged.
- Click the “Focus” button with the target icon. It's next to the card view button.
- Choose a slice. Each slice shows the number of matching tasks. A slice that nothing matches right now is unavailable.
- To turn focus off, click the cross next to the button or press 0.
| Slice | Key | What it highlights |
|---|---|---|
| “Deadlines” | 1 | Tasks with a deadline, with the deadline shown on every card |
| “Messages” | 2 | Tasks with unread messages, with the last message shown on the card |
| “Blockers” | 3 | Tasks with blockers and tasks waiting for the previous task in a chain |
| “Chains” | 4 | Tasks linked to other tasks, with their step numbers |
| “Stale” | 5 | Tasks that have been in their column longer than usual, with the number of days on the card. Business plan only |
| “Mine” | 6 | Only your tasks |
| “Metrics” | 7 | Numbers from project fields on cards and totals in columns. If there's only one such field, the slice is named after it |
Blockers and chains are covered in “Blockers: how to mark a task as blocked” and “Related tasks and task chains”.
“Today”, “Upcoming”, “Inbox” and “My tasks” have the first four slices. On a board, a slice appears only when it has something to tell apart. For example, “Mine” is there if the board's tasks have more than one assignee, and “Chains” if the board has linked tasks.
Focus stays on while the page is open. The keys work when the cursor isn't in an input field and no window is open. Pressing the same key again turns focus off.
How to look at a task without opening the window
Quick look shows the main details of a task in a panel on the right. It's available only on a computer.
- Hover over a card.
- Press Space, or keep the pointer on the card. After 0.7 seconds the quick look panel opens on the right.
- The arrow keys switch the panel to neighboring tasks. Enter opens the task window, and Esc closes the panel.
The panel shows where the task is, its status, description and properties. The “Why the card stands out” block explains the deadline color and the icons on the card. Below are the “Last message” with a “Reply” button, the chain steps and the checklist, whose items you can check off right here. At the bottom is the “Open the task” button.
While the panel is open, it follows the pointer. Rest the pointer on another card, and the panel shows that one. If you hold Space and release it, the panel closes by itself. The panel also opens from “+N” at the end of the property line and from “Quick look” in the right-click menu. Clicking outside the panel and the cards closes it.
How to choose what a card shows
- Open the card view menu and choose “Card settings…” at the bottom. On a board, the same window opens from “Task card settings” in the three-dot menu.
- At the top of the window, choose “This board”, “All boards” or “My lists”. This sets where the settings apply.
- Make your changes. They're saved right away, and “Saved” appears at the bottom of the window.
Real cards on the left of the window show how everything will look.
- “How the card looks”. The card view, plus a separate view for the phone in the “On the phone” row.
- The “Minimal” block. Which details to show under the title and in what order. The first two that the task has are used.
- “Checklist on the card”. A bar along the bottom edge or a number such as “3/5”.
- “What is on the card”. For each property, choose “On the card”, “When important” or “In the panel”.
- “Keys and the panel”. Here you turn off single-key shortcuts and opening the panel by resting the pointer. Without the delay, the panel opens with Space, “+N” and a chain step number.
The owner and admins of a team space also see the “Team default for this board” block. The “Make my set the default” button sets what everyone sees on the cards of this board. Anyone can still change it for themselves on top of the default.
Card view and focus on your phone
In “Today”, “Upcoming”, “Inbox” and “My tasks”, both buttons are combined into one three-dot button labeled “Display”. Its menu has two sections, “Card view” and “Focus”. On a board, the card view and focus are in the “Board actions” menu, which is also a three-dot button. There's no quick look and no single-key shortcuts on a phone, and tapping a card opens the task window.
