# Simple and extended projects: how a project grows

In Taska, a project with one section is a simple project and opens straight on it. When you add a second section, it becomes an extended project with an overview, section tabs and a workflow map.

## Simple project

A simple project has one section: a board, a knowledge base or a roadmap. The project opens straight on it and uses the section's own header. For example, a board project has the board buttons in its header: views, filters, “⋮” and “Create”.

You can tell what kind of simple project it is by its icon in the project list and in the sidebar. A board project has a kanban board icon, a knowledge base project has a book icon, and a roadmap project has a stepped chart icon.

## Extended project

An extended project has two or more sections. In the project list, it has a diagram icon. The project opens on the “Overview” page. It shows the section cards, the project's activity feed and blocks with your tasks in this project, the team and the project search.

The header of an extended project has tabs: “Overview”, then the sections, such as “Boards”, “Knowledge” and “Roadmaps”. If the project has a board, there's also a “Workflow” tab. It's a map of how tasks move between the project's boards.

Inside a section, its name in the header works as a switcher. Click the name to open a list of all the project's sections.

## How a project becomes extended

1. Open a simple project and click “Create” in the header.
2. In the “Add to the project” block, choose “Board”, “Knowledge base” or “Roadmap”.
3. Fill in the window for the new section and click “Create”.

Taska opens the new section and shows the notification “The project has grown” with an “Overview” button. The button takes you to the overview, where you can see the project's new layout.

You can also create an extended project right away by selecting several sections in the “Create a project” window. See “[How to create a project](https://taska.be/en/help/549-how-to-create-a-project)” for how to do it.

When a project stays simple

If you delete the only board in a board project and create a new one, the project stays a board project, because it again has one section of the same kind. A section of a different kind makes the project extended even if it's the only section.

## A project doesn't turn back into a simple one

An extended project stays extended, even if only one section is left. If you need to run a board or a knowledge base on its own, move it to a new project. Open the project's list of boards or knowledge bases, click “⋮” on the section card and choose “Extract into a separate project”. This can't be undone: the workflow connections to other boards are removed.

It works the other way, too. You can move a simple project into an extended project in the same space. On the space page, click “⋮” on the project card and choose “Move into a project”.

## What to choose

- One board suits a small piece of work or personal to-dos.
- One knowledge base suits you if you only need articles: guidelines, instructions or a team wiki.
- One roadmap suits you if you only need a plan of epics for the months ahead.
- Several sections make sense when several teams work on the project with their own boards, and the documents and the plan should be next to the tasks.

You can start with one section. You can add the others at any time, and they only cost a place in your plan's limit.

How many sections fit in a project

On the Free plan, a project can have one board, one knowledge base and one roadmap. On Free Team, a project can have up to 4 boards. Pro and Business have no such limit. How many sections fit in a whole space is explained in “[Projects and sections: how work is organized](https://taska.be/en/help/548-projects-and-sections-how-work-is-organized)”.

## Example

“Launch marketing” in the Aurora team is currently a simple project with one board. Olivia wants to keep press releases next to the tasks. She clicks “Create” and chooses “Knowledge base”, and the project becomes extended. It gets an overview and the “Boards”, “Knowledge” and “Workflow” tabs.
