# How to set up recurring tasks

In Taska, a recurring task doesn't close when you complete it. It moves to its next date instead. You set the repeat rule in the “Task recurrence” block of the task window.

## How to set up recurrence

1. Open the task and click the “Task recurrence” block below the fields. The block expands.
2. In the “Type” field, choose how often the task repeats: “Every day”, “Every weekday (Mon-Fri)”, “Every week”, “Every 2 weeks”, “Every month”, “Every year” or “Custom”.
3. For “Every week” and “Every 2 weeks”, select the days in the “Repeat on” row. Taska selects the weekday of the task's deadline for you.
4. In the “Ends” field, choose when the repeats stop: “Never”, “On date” or “After number of occurrences”.
5. Click “Save”.

The task window with the Task recurrence block expanded: the block header is numbered 1, the Type field set to Every week 2, the Repeat on days 3, the Ends field 4 and the Save button 5

After you save, an icon with two circular arrows appears next to the deadline on the card. If you hover over the deadline, you see “Deadline. Recurring task”.

The same block is in the “Create a task” window, so you can set up recurrence when you create a task.

Repeats count from the deadline

The next date is counted from the task's deadline, and the time of day stays the same. If the task has no deadline, Taska counts the next date from the moment you complete the task.

How to set up “Custom” and “Every month”

- “Custom”. In the “Repeat every” field, enter a number and choose days, weeks, months or years. For weeks, the “Repeat on” row appears. For months, the “Monthly recurrence type” field appears.
- “Every month”. In the “Monthly recurrence type” field, choose a day of the month or a weekday, for example the third Wednesday of the month. If you chose a day of the month, you can change it in the “Day of the month” field. When a month has no such day, the task moves to the last day of the month.

## How to complete a recurring task

Click the circle to the left of the title on the card, as with any task. Taska shows “Done! The task has been successfully completed.”, but the task stays open, and its deadline moves to the next date of the rule.

Missed dates don't pile up. If the task is overdue, the deadline moves to the nearest date in the future. Each time you complete the task, its blockers are removed, and your timer for it is deleted along with any time you haven't sent to the chat.

The “Task recurrence” block shows the “Completed iterations” counter. If you set a number of occurrences, you also see the total.

## When the task closes

- “Never”. The task repeats until you remove the recurrence.
- “On date”. The task closes when you complete it and the next date would fall after the “End date”.
- “After number of occurrences”. The first deadline counts toward the “Number of occurrences”. If you enter 3, the task moves to a new date twice and closes the third time you complete it.

If you reopen a closed recurring task, the occurrence count starts over.

## How to remove recurrence

1. Open the task and expand the “Task recurrence” block.
2. In the “Type” field, choose “Does not repeat”.
3. Click “Save”.

It becomes a regular task with the same deadline, and the circle closes it.

How to move one occurrence

Change the date in the “Deadline” field and click “Save”. The schedule doesn't shift. After you complete the task, it moves to the next date of the rule as if you hadn't changed the deadline. To move all future occurrences, change the rule together with the deadline, for example the days in “Repeat on”. Then the schedule is counted again from the new deadline.

A recurring task in a calendar

The board calendar and the “Upcoming” calendar also show future occurrences, which look paler than regular cards. The “Upcoming” list, “Today” and “My tasks” show the task once, on its nearest date. If you drag an occurrence to another time in a calendar, Taska asks what to move: “This task”, “This and following tasks” or “All tasks”.

How to delete a recurring task

Open the task and click the trash button in the bottom left corner of the window. Taska asks what to delete: “This task”, “This and following tasks” or “All tasks”. The button works wherever the task window opens: on a board, in lists and in calendars. If the task has no deadline, Taska doesn't ask about occurrences and opens the usual confirmation window. If you delete the task from the card menu on a board or in a list (right-click and “Delete”), the whole series is deleted. See “[How to delete and restore a task](https://taska.be/en/help/524-how-to-delete-and-restore-a-task)”.

A recurring task in the “Overdue” block

The “Clear deadline” button doesn't remove the deadline of a recurring task. It moves the task to the nearest date in the future instead. If the repeats have already ended, Taska removes the recurrence and the deadline.
