# Files and images in a task

In Taska, task files are in the “Files” block of the task window. You can add them with a button, by dragging them in, or by pasting from the clipboard. Uploads work on the Pro and Business plans.

Who can use this

You can upload files on the Pro and Business plans and during their trials. The plan of the space where the task lives is what counts. On free plans, you can still view, download, rename and delete files that are already uploaded, and the “Upload files” button offers you a plan change.

## How to attach a file

1. Open the task. The “Files” block is in the middle column of the window, below the “Checklist”.
2. Click “Upload files” at the bottom of the block and choose files on your computer. You can choose several at once.

When the upload finishes, Taska shows “Files uploaded successfully”, and the files appear in the list. Everyone with access to the task sees them right away. You don't need to click “Save”.

You can also add files without the button.

- Drag files from your computer onto the “Files” block. When “Drop files here” appears, release the mouse button.
- Copy an image or a screenshot and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac) while the task window is open. The cursor must not be in a text field. If it's in the chat message field, the image is attached to your message.

## What you can do with a file

Each file in the list shows a preview or an icon, the format and the size. There are four buttons to the right of the name.

1. “View” opens the file in a window without downloading it.
2. “Download” saves the file to your computer.
3. “Rename” changes the file name in Taska. The file downloads with the new name too. You can also rename a file by double-clicking its name. Enter saves the name, Esc cancels.
4. “Delete” deletes the file.

A deleted file can't be restored

The file is deleted right away, without a confirmation, and it doesn't go to the trash. If the file was attached to a chat message, it disappears from the message too.

The same actions are in the menu that opens when you right-click a file. To change the order of files, drag a file by the dotted handle on its left.

## Which files open without downloading

The preview window shows images, video, audio, PDF files, Word documents (DOCX), Excel spreadsheets (XLSX) and text files such as TXT, CSV or JSON. In a spreadsheet with several sheets, each sheet opens on its own tab. For other files, Taska shows “Preview is not available for this file type”, and you need to download the file.

If you right-click an image in the preview window, a menu opens with “Open in a new tab”, “Copy image” and “Download”.

## Files and images in the chat

To attach a file to a message, click the paper clip “Attach files” to the left of the message field. You can also drag files into the chat or paste an image from the clipboard while the cursor is in the message field. You can attach up to 20 files to one message, and the text is optional.

An attached file is uploaded right away and appears in the “Files” block even before you send the message. The cross on an attachment above the field removes the file completely. In a sent message, images are shown as tiles and open when you click them. Other files are downloaded. See “[Task chat: replies, mentions and reactions](https://taska.be/en/help/515-task-chat-replies-mentions-and-reactions)” for more about the chat.

## How much you can upload

| Plan | One file | All files in the space |
|---|---|---|
| Pro and Pro Trial | up to 250 MB | 25 GB |
| Business and Business Trial | up to 1 GB | 100 GB for each seat in the subscription |
| Free and Free Team | no uploads | no uploads |

The total includes files in tasks, chat messages and knowledge base articles in that space. If a file is over the limit or the space is full, Taska opens a window that offers a different plan.

Files in a new task

The “Create a task” window has a “Files” block too. Files you upload there are attached to the task when you click “Create”. If you close the window earlier and save a draft, the files stay in it. They're deleted if you answer “Don't save” or “Delete”, click “Reset” on the draft note, or when the draft expires. See “[How to create a task](https://taska.be/en/help/508-how-to-create-a-task)”.

Files don't upload

- The task window is read-only. This happens if you're a guest in the project or the project is archived. You can view and download files, but you can't upload them.
- The space is on a free plan. The “Upload files” button opens a window that offers a plan change.
- The task came from a service desk. Uploads depend on the plan of the desk owner, so a requester may see “File uploads are turned off by the plan of this service desk. Ask its owner to upgrade.”
