# How to create a task

To create a task in Taska, click “Add a task” in a board column or “Create a task” in the sidebar. Only the title is required. You can fill in the rest later.

## How to create a task on a board

1. In the column you need, click “Add a task” below the cards. The task goes to the bottom of the column. To put it at the top, click the plus button in the column header instead.
2. In the “Title” field, enter a name for the task.
3. If needed, fill in “Assignee”, “Deadline”, “Priority” and other fields. The “Status” field shows the task's column, and you can change it there. You can also fill everything in later, in the task window.
4. Click “Create”. You can also press Enter in the “Title” field.

A board column: the Add a task button below the cards and the plus button in the column header are numbered 1

The Create a task window: the Title field is numbered 2, the other form fields 3 and the Create button 4. Checklist and Files are on the right

The task appears in the column, and Taska shows a “Task created” notification.

On the right side of the window there are “Checklist” and “Files”. Items and files you add there are saved together with the task.

## How to create a task without a board

Such a task goes to “Inbox”, your personal list of tasks outside projects.

1. In the sidebar, click “Create a task”.
2. Enter a title.
3. If the task belongs on a board right away, pick a project in the “Project” field, then a board and a status. If you leave “Inbox” selected in the field, the note at the bottom of the window reads “The task will go to your Inbox”.
4. Click “Create”.

The Create a task window opened from the sidebar: the title is numbered 2, the Project field 3 and the Create button 4. The note that the task will go to Inbox is outlined

You can move an “Inbox” task to a board later. See “[Inbox: capture tasks quickly and sort them onto boards](https://taska.be/en/help/496-inbox-capture-tasks-quickly-and-sort-them-onto-boards)”.

## Other ways

- On a board, click “Create” in the header and choose “Task”. It goes to the top of the first column.
- Right-click an empty spot in a column and choose “Add a task”.
- In search (Ctrl+K), choose the “Create a task” action.
- On the empty “Inbox” and “Today” screens, click “Create a task”. If you open the window from the “Today” screen, the “Deadline” field is already set to the next full hour.
- In a task chat, open the message menu and choose “Create a task”. See “[Task chat: replies, mentions and reactions](https://taska.be/en/help/515-task-chat-replies-mentions-and-reactions)”.
- On your phone, tap the plus button in the bottom bar. On a board, the task goes to the first column. On other screens, it goes to “Inbox”.

What you have to fill in

Only the “Title”. If you leave it empty, the field shows “Required field” and the task isn't created. A project can have its own required fields too. They're marked with an asterisk.

Why there's no “Assignee” or “Epic” field

“Assignee” appears when a project has more than one person. By default, the assignee is whoever creates the task. “Epic” appears when the project has epics on a roadmap. In “Inbox”, you are always the assignee, and there are no tags or epics.

## If you close the window without creating the task

If you've already entered something and close the window without clicking “Create”, the “Task draft” window appears with the question “The task has not been created yet. Save what you have entered as a draft? It will open here the next time you create a task”.

- “Save draft” closes the window. The title, fields, checklist and files stay in the draft, and Taska shows a “Draft saved” notification.
- “Don't save” closes the window without a draft. What you entered is lost, and Taska deletes the uploaded files.
- “Stay” takes you back to the form. Esc, the cross and a click outside the question window do the same.

Taska asks when you close the window with the cross, the “Cancel” button, the Esc key or a click outside the window. It also asks when you click the Back button in your browser or on your phone, or go to another part of Taska. If you reload the page or close the tab, Taska saves the draft by itself, without asking. An empty window closes right away, and so does a window where you only picked a project, a board or a status. What Taska fills in when the window opens (the deadline on the “Today” screen, the column, text from an article or a chat) doesn't count as entered.

## How to get back to a draft

Open “Create a task” where you started, for example on the same board, from the sidebar in the same space, or from the same chat message. A note above the form says “Draft saved” with the day and time, and the fields hold what you entered. Click “Create”. The task appears with its checklist and files, and the draft disappears.

The Create a task window opened with a draft: the “Draft saved” note with the day, time and the Reset button is outlined above the form, and the title holds the entered text

If you open the window with the button of a different column or from a day in the calendar, Taska takes the column or the deadline from there, not from the draft.

To start over, click “Reset” on the note, then “Reset” again in the question “Reset the form and delete the draft?”. The form is cleared, and the draft and its files are deleted.

If you change the draft and close the window, Taska asks again. Instead of “Don't save”, the question has a “Delete” button. It deletes the whole draft along with its files, and “Save draft” saves the new version. If you haven't changed anything, the window closes without asking, and the draft stays.

Where the draft is stored

Only in this browser on this device. Another browser, your phone or another computer won't have it. The draft expires 14 days after it was last saved, and Taska deletes its files. Signing out and clearing your browser data erase drafts, and Taska deletes their files by itself in about a month. You can keep up to 20 drafts. When you save a 21st, the oldest one is deleted along with its files.
